Adding Curtains Over Our New Front Door.

When we were designing our new front door with Simpson, I knew I wanted to incorporate more glass to let in as much natural light as possible. Natural light brings warmth and openness to a space, making it feel more inviting. However, more glass also meant figuring out how to maintain privacy. Although we don’t live on a busy street, we do experience a considerable amount of foot traffic, and our front door is relatively close to the sidewalk.

Personally, I’m not a fan of privacy glass options like frosted or textured glass, so our choices were limited. I also considered using clear glass with a textured vinyl film that could be installed over the glass. However, from the options I liked, the one we chose didn’t provide 100% privacy. So, I knew I might need an extra layer of privacy, especially at night.

When the door arrived, the privacy glass option we chose actually provided a good amount of privacy from a distance. During the day, unless you press your eyes against the glass, you can’t see inside the house, and at night, only silhouettes are visible. But I fell in love with the idea of adding curtains over our front door, so I went ahead and installed them. I believe curtains soften the look and add charm and coziness to the space. Plus, when closed, they provide that extra level of privacy.

A smart lock that doesn’t look like one.

A Touch of European Inspiration

In Europe, curtains over doors are quite common, especially in older homes. Heavy drapes are often used to provide protection against drafts and cold air during the winter months. While our curtains aren’t as heavy, I love how they echo this old-world charm. They add a layer of texture and warmth that makes the space feel even more inviting.

Would You Consider Curtains Over Your Front Door?

Adding curtains over your front door might not be the first solution that comes to mind when thinking about privacy, but it’s certainly a stylish one. Curtains are versatile, functional, and add a decorative element that can enhance the overall look of your entryway. Whether you live on a busy street or simply want to add a touch of charm, curtains could be the perfect addition.

What do you think? Are curtains over the front door something you’d consider for your home? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
