Main bedroom design, Before and after.
From blue carpet to wood floors, white walls to dark and moody. This bedroom has changed completely over the course of 7 months and we couldn’t love it more.
Let’s start from the beginning, right when we got the keys.
This bedroom was a huge upgrade from our previous rental home, we had more space a large closet and en suite bathroom. Did I mentioned the bathroom had carpet as well? yes it did.
Some of the things we did right away was removing the blue carpet, then we had this engineered wood flooring installed -game changer!-. My husband and I removed the wallpaper and then applied a fresh coat of white paint on the ceiling and walls, then we closed the top part of the wall to the bathroom and added this modern glass barn door to close the entry to the bathroom. It felt so good to start with a blank canvas.
I decided to make the most of the space with our current furniture and decor while I was trying to figure out a design plan. One of the things I learned over the years is to never rush design decisions, home takes time. Figuring out a space takes time, living in the house for some time before making changes will help you understand the flow of your new home. What works and what doesn’t and what you can do to make the most of a space for your family’s needs. Also, what worked great before in your previous home might not work as great in the new one and that is okay, every house has its own vibe.
Since I didn’t had a design plan in mind yet, for the time being I decided to shop our home to create a cozy and inviting bedroom. I added these affordable sconces we had in our previous bedroom, layered some bedding and I added a vintage piece of art above our bed for more color contrast.
I really liked this first room set up, the furniture layout worked great but the scale compared to the room was a bit off, a great excuse to finally get the king size bed we always wanted.
We wanted this bedroom to feel grand and inviting. Our current queen size bed left too much unused space and it felt like a floating island in the middle of the room.
After almost 7 months living in the house I finally had a desing plan and color palette for this space. I found the perfect color for the walls that would go beautiful with our home color story. A rich brown/black color from Sherwin Williams called Urbane Bronze. I can’t lie, I was a bit intimidated when I started painting, but as soon as the space was all finished it was perfection. The color brings so much warmth to the space. It now feels intimate and cozy.
We kept our nightstands and they look even more beautiful with the dark wall, every piece of furniture looks elevated and luxurious against the dark and moody wall.
The whole space is a mix of neutrals with a few pop of colors to keep it interesting. I love mixing textures in a space, woods and different fabrics and patterns all layered always create magic.
For the bedding, the mix of these two different quilts is my favorite! This ribbed quilt has a subtle pattern that looks so pretty with this floral quilt and shams. The extra long Kilim lumbar adds the unexpected pop of color and pattern, it brings some of the warmth of the wall on the bed for the perfect balance between light and dark tones.
We had this chaise in our living room as part of an Ikea sectional. I kept the chaise part of the sectional and give it a refresh with this gorgeous sage green velvet custom covers and walnut legs, it looks brand new! Now we have a cozy seating area to enjoy.
The MVP of this transformation has to be the paint! Our bedroom feels completely different with dark walls, it looks like it was meant to be like this since the beginning, but I am glad I took my time before making any design decisions, this space came together so perfectly because of that. Designing with intention is the way to go.
Our bedroom is now a space that I love to go to at the end of every day. It is soothing, romantic and welcoming, exactly how we wanted it to be.
Thank you for reading!
