How to create a color story for your home

Decorating with color is fun! It is one of my favorite ways to incorporate some character into our builder grade home. One of the most amazing transformations in our spaces happened just with just paint. My top favorite is our main bedroom, it is a completely different room! and also the guest room with that gorgeous dark clay/brick color. Well, to be honest at this point I don’t have one favorite space, I am lo

If you want to incorporate a new color in your home, how to know what color will work best with the rest of the current color palette in your home? or if you are just starting decorating, how to create a color story for your home?

I like to create a folder on my phone with screenshots of all the current colors -paint colors- we have in our home. Then I add a new paint color and see how it will look with all the other colors we currently have. Seeing all the colors together at the same time helps enormously, you can then see what color will be a great idea to add and if it will look good in your home with all other colors you currently have there.

For example, this is our current color Story, I just recently added a yellow/mustard bead-board wall around my daughter’s bedroom, I went to my color story folder first before deciding on a “new” color to incorporate in our home.

You don’t have to use this method idea for paint colors only, it works just as great for accent colors with furniture or decor accessories.

Our home Color Story, not including the white walls.

I also like to add into the -Color story- folder pictures of the spaces where we used those colors, it can be pictures of walls or pictures of the decor accents with our color palette, like furniture and accessories.

You want all the spaces in your home to feel connected somehow, not like islands with completely different styles and colors.

If you pay attention to the pictures next, you can see that all colors in our home color palette have been used in different doses in each room. Here are some of those spaces.

We used some of the colors in our color story for decor accesories like throw blankets and furniture.

Recent custom color I created for our daughters big girl bedroom design. It is still a work in progress. We added pops of black that you can also find around our home.

A pop of Taupe on the stairs to have an interesting feature as you walk in the door. Somehow it is still neutral with the black stairs.

Green board and batten, black brick floors and a pop of the red/clay color with a small vintage rug.

Clay/red with the same color on the closet doors as we have in the kitchen and a pop of black with doors.

Gray/green called gray Heron by PPG with black accents in our kids bathroom.

The long lumbar brings one of the color from our home color story into our bedroom.

A touch of mustard/golden yellow throw in our boys bunkbeds.

I hope this post was helpful! I will be back next to talk about was to incorporate color in your homes for the ones still shy about paint colors other than white and black :)
